E3 Data collection methods
What is (are) the method(s) of collecting the data (eg self-completion, telephone interviewing, face to face interviewing, etc)? Why was it (were they) chosen? (E3)
Note. If more than one method will be used, the agency should indicate the extent to which it expects each method will be used, eg 5% of responses by fax and the remaining responses by phone.
The survey data will be collected via telephone interviewing to be conducted by ACNielsen. This method was chosen based on the type of information that was to be collected and the questionnaire length. It was considered to be the least burdensome approach for business respondents. This methodology is also consistent with that being used by other Austrade surveys being conducted, which will ensure consistency and comparability of the information collected.

E4 Respondent choices
If only one method is stated in E3, above, what consideration has been given to offering respondents a choice in how they provide their answers (eg phone, fax, mail, Web/Internet)? (E4)
See comments to E3 about comparability of approach and ease of being surveyed via the telephone.

E5 Questionnaire testing
What testing of the questionnaire(s) has (have) taken place? (E5)
Note. Should include a brief description of the testing, ie, when, number of respondents, methodology, and major findings.
Pilot was very successful. We had a high response rate (or at least interview: refusal ratio) with only 1 refusal for 10 interviews. The interview length was a little longer than anticipated (8.5 minutes per interview) but these were offset somewhat by the good response rate.
The questionnaire flowed smoothly and was well received by respondents. A couple of minor changes were suggested:
- the Supervisor suggested that we change the introduction to say "my name is....., calling on behalf of Austrade, from ACNielsen..." as they felt this would improve response;
- we may need a 'neither' option for Q15 as one respondent in the pilot dealt with o/s importers however did not export (and was not thinking about it).
In addition, where relevant, questions from previous Austrade surveys have been incorporated into the design of the questionnaire. No issues have arisen from these questions in these previous studies.

E6 Consultation with businesses
What consultations have taken place, other than testing, with businesses or business associations regarding availability of data items and data collection methods? (E6)
Note. Refers to activities other than testing.
Data items are available and are collected from Austrade’s own telephone and Core Business Systems (CBS) databases. Consultations with the senior managers in the Melbourne and Sydney office also took place.

E7 Training of staff
What training of staff who have dealings with respondents has taken place or is planned? (E7)
Note. Should include: interviewers; staff involved in follow-up activities; and staff involved in answering queries from respondents.
The interviewing will be conducted by ACNielsen, an independent, external market research company. The interviewers conducting the survey will be fully briefed by the researcher at ACNielsen prior to the commencement of the study. All follow up activities and queries from respondents will be serviced by ACNielsen staff with any issues referred to Austrade for information or follow-up where necessary.
