Data mapping project
The pilot data mapping project is one of the outcomes from the Population Well Being data gaps workshop. It involves selecting a significant policy issue, identifying the information required to answer the question and then mapping this to the available data sources. Early childhood, a significant cross cutting policy concern for the Australian government, is the topic for the pilot project.
The early childhood data mapping pilot project will support the vision of the National Statistical Service (NSS). Identified outcomes of the exercise include:
-understanding the key policy questions relevant to the topic, and the identification of a subset of these questions for investigation in the pilot exercise;
-reviewing the information available to answer the identified policy questions;
-providing options to improve the information base for evidence based policy development and evaluation by articulating how current knowledge can be expanded through better access to existing information or the creation of new information from existing data sources (e.g. through data linking or other analysis and research);
-using those options for improved cross-government access to particular sources to articulate potential enhancements to wider government data management policies and guidelines that could support improvements in addressing other policy related information priorities;
-increasing awareness of relevant data sources; and
-forging statistical partnerships between the key policy agencies and statistical agencies.
