Australian Social Trends

Telling stories using statistics – Australian Social Trends

Australian Social Trends is a quarterly publication that draws on a diverse range of data; sourced from both the Australian Bureau of Statistics and other agencies, to present a picture of Australian society.

Each Australian Social Trends publication presents a selection of articles that aim to address current and perennial social concerns. The publications also provide answers to key social questions.

Recent editions of the Australian Social Trends publication have provided a canvas for insights into a wide range of topics to be explored.

The March edition examined gaps and gains in health and education. The article Life expectancy trends reveals that the health of Australians continues to improve. Meanwhile life expectancy gender gap has decreased in the past 30 years, women on average still outlive men by around five years.

The June edition examines the time spent by Australians watching movies and football (going to the cinema and playing sports). Online @ home demonstrates the growing presence of the internet in Australian homes; in 2009–10, seven in ten homes (72%) were “connected” to the internet. In 2009, four in five children (79%) aged 5–14 years used the internet, making them the Children of the digital revolution.

The September edition reveals an increase in enrolments in independent schools over the past ten years in Are all schools uniform? Also featured is a profile on the growing industry of Community services workers.

Watch out for the next edition of Australian Social Trends, published on 14 December 2011.
