Statistical Leadership Initiative
Seminar 1
Happiness, Subjective Wellbeing and Behavioural Economics: Old Ideas, New Understandings
13 September 2011

Abstract:
From the nuns of Milwaukee to the Korean economy, an increasing body of evidence is being assembled pointing to why policy makers can no longer afford to ignore happiness.

In this seminar Jon discusses some of the ways in which our understanding of happiness and broader subjective wellbeing is increasing and how national statistical agencies need to contribute.

As well as talking about how this understanding is already starting to shape policy, Jon speculates on the impacts it might have over the next 20 years. Impacts which he believes may revolutionise both what governments try to do and the way they do it.

Speaker:
Jon Hall - Director, Labour and Demography Statistics, Australian Bureau of Statistics
