In this session Merry Branson (Assistant Statistician, Customer Services Branch, ABS) will speak about putting evidence into evidence based policy. If our primary goal is to improve the reliability of advice concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of policy settings and possible alternatives, how can visualisation help us?
Many of us are exploring visualisation to help us focus on problem-framing, gathering and assessing reliable evidence, communicating and transferring knowledge into decision making and even evaluating the effectiveness of implementation and program delivery in complex policy areas.
We can reap a number of benefits from advanced visualisation tools. Since the tools are intuitive and easy to use, even novice analysts can uncover complex relationships and understand where to focus their attention to derive insights. We can also reduce dependence on IT staff by making staff self-sufficient when it comes to analysis and reporting. When information is thoughtfully visualised anyone can take advantage of it to gain strategic insights, make informed decisions and achieve better outcomes.
