Seminar 3
Statisticians: Reluctant Revolutionaries of the 21st Century
27 July 2011

Abstract:
In this presentation Jon will investigate:
- Can statistics revitalise democracy?
- Might a discussion about data help heal the deepest rifts in a society?
- Will the measurement of happiness revolutionise policy making?
- And why apolitical statistics are often anything but ….
From Bhutan to Brussels, from Nobel prize winners to non-profit organisations, questions like these are fast gaining traction and are now taken very seriously by Presidents and Prime Ministers alike. They herald, in Jon's opinion, the beginnings of a revolution in the way we understand the importance and the role of statistics. Therefore, statisticians themselves, perhaps reluctantly and perhaps unwittingly, are indeed the new revolutionaries for the 21st Century.
Jon will reflect on these ideas and others in this presentation, and ask what the global statistical community needs to do differently if the revolution is to succeed.

Speaker:
Jon Hall - Director, Labour Force and Supplementary Surveys, Australian Bureau of Statistics
