Aligning statistical standards
Users of statistics will understand the importance of uniformity and alignment in statistical standards. It makes it easier to integrate data, and hence enhances comparability across national statistics.
The following NSS initiatives help to ensure that a richer and more useful source of data for decision making is created and maintained.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare operates METeOR - a Metadata On-line Registry. METeOR is Australia's repository and a resource for developing national data standards relating to the health, community services and housing assistance sectors.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has developed a new geographical unit known as Mesh Blocks. A Mesh Block is a basic building block that can be aggregated to cover the various statistical, political and administrative regions in Australia. Together with other resources like Address Coders, this allows statistics from different sources to be mapped to comparable regions.
